I Must Finish – a Short Story by David Graham

My heart was thumping, adrenaline the only thing keeping me going - no surprise, I hadn’t slept for days. But I had to keep going, even if I wanted to, I couldn’t stop. It was against my nature to do so. Some people say that to achieve their goal, they would die trying, for me that was not an option, dying before achieving my goal would be dying failing, and failure was not an option. I simply would not die until I had succeeded.

How I wished that were not the case, most normal people by now would have given up, any smart person would have given up.

I used to think myself smart, yet no matter how much I knew continuing was madness, I simply could not stop. I had to keep going. Going, going, and going.

It was like I was in the desert, and I hadn’t eaten or drunk for days, the sun was scorching and in every direction there was nothing but sand. By all accounts, I should be dead, yet somehow I was still going, clawing my way onwards, no clue which direction to go in, yet going in that direction anyhow, all in a desperate attempt to escape the desert.

Except I wasn’t in the desert, I was here, right here.

How did I get here? How? I knew the answer to that, it had started in childhood, I had read a book, and what I had read in the book had brought my imagination to life in a way I could never have imagined possible.
Why had I had to read that book? It had been my mother’s fault; she had bought me it for Christmas.

Why, Mother, why?

If she hadn’t bought me that book imagine the life I could have had, I could have had a normal job, a normal family life, a normal social life, I could have been normal. Instead, all I had was this, a goal that I had no choice but to achieve.

And I would achieve it, every step I took forwards no matter how small brought me closer to doing so. I just had to keep going! I had to keep fighting! I had to keep believing! If I did, I knew I had it in me to get it done. I could do it!

Then it happened, I did it. I reached the end. I finished my latest story.

The problem was, as soon as I finished it, an idea for a new one came to mind and it all started over. And I wouldn’t change that fact for the world.

Thanks for reading, I truly hope you enjoyed it! This short story was inspired by my experiences writing fiction, for any writers out there, if you relate to it, let me know in the comments!
